Welcome to Coaching!

What do you want more or less in your life right now? What are the reasons that they are not happening yet?

How does your career or life looks like when it reaches its pinnacle?

If life is a canvas, what kind of painting do you want paint on it?

The questions above might be some of the coaching questions that you got asked by your coach at the beginning of your coaching journey. What kind of feel do these questions give you?

Let’s explore a bit about coaching using Q&As.

Why do I need a coach?

You need a coach because you want a better self and a better life. Honestly, you have been doing fine without me as your coach, and you will also be doing fine after I am out of your life. To me, coaching is about accelerated growth and accelerated changes. Your coach will listen, understand, support, and challenge you to get more of what is important to you than when you are on your own.

What is coaching, really?

As Sir John Whitmore, coaching pioneer and Co-founder of Performance Consultants, has defined, ” coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” Coaching is a thought-provoking process that is driven by you and devoted to self-development. It is a confidential, reflective and safe space for you to work through things that are important to you. It can help you learn about yourself, define areas to focus on, set and track goals, find relevant resources, and reflect on your progress. It is about supporting you get where you want to be in your career and in your life.

What are some of the reasons that you are hired as a coach?

  • There is a significant gap between what they have and what they want
  • They want to do more than they will on their own
  • They are willing to change and to experiment with new ways of doing things
  • They have an important project or task in their life but they have not yet had the traction on it
  • They are going through a period of time that there are personal changes, career changes or organizational changes. They would like to have clarity and support that can help them navigate through the changes.

Is there a gap and are you willing to experiment?

What should I look for in a coach?

  • Experience: The coach should have worked well with someone who is where you are now
  • Compatibility: The coach and coachee should get along, naturally
  • Respect: The coachee should feel respect for who the coach is and for what he or she has accomplished
